In the heart of central Albania, between the hills of Gramsh and the limestone ridges of Tomorr National Park, lies a place that feels untouched by time — Holta Canyon (Kanioni i Holtës). It’s not famous, not overrun, and that’s its strength.
You walk into it expecting a pleasant gorge — and end up in a cathedral of stone, water, and silence.
The Walk Into the Canyon
The Holta River cuts through high limestone walls, carving a deep canyon that runs for about 3 kilometers. The trail starts near Katund i Holtës, a small village around 15 km from Gramsh, and follows the river upstream.
There’s no marked path — just the rhythm of the river guiding you forward. Depending on the season, you’ll walk on dry riverbed stones or wade knee-deep through clear turquoise pools. In spring and early summer, when snowmelt feeds the river, the water shines bright blue under the light filtering through the cliffs.
As you move deeper, the walls tighten to only a few meters apart, rising nearly 100 meters above. The sound of water echoes between them — part whisper, part thunder. The canyon widens again near natural springs, where travertine terraces form small turquoise pools perfect for a quick swim.

If you have time, combine Holta Canyon with a visit to Tomorr National Park or Sotira Waterfall — both within an hour’s reach.
Notes for Hikers

- Waterproof shoes recommended; you’ll wade multiple times.
- Bring no plastic — the canyon is pristine and still mostly untouched.
- Weather changes fast: thunderstorms in late afternoon are common.
- Facilities: Minimal — one café near entrance; no toilets beyond that.
Reflections
Holta Canyon feels raw — not curated, not yet commercial. You go there to see what Albania still hides between its mountains: water sculpting stone for millennia, villagers greeting you with quiet curiosity, and silence that feels earned.
It’s not the grandest canyon, nor the deepest. But it’s one of those rare places where the landscape still belongs entirely to itself — and you’re just a guest passing through.
